Canon Digital Rebel XSI 12MP Digital SLR Camera (Silver Body Only) Review

This Canon is very nice. However, I prefer using my Canon A1 film camera. Digital is great, but I wish this camera had the ability to take photographs as well as my A1 SLR. No way, it just can’t be done. But for a digital camera for under 0, whereas mine included the 50-250mm zoom lens and the standard 18-55mm, so I received even a better deal. I do like the camera, I just can’t seem to get the quality pictures I think it should deliver. It could be me and not the camera. All of the whistles & bells are fantastic, including the battery life. I use my old Canon Speedlite 199a flash on this camera. Its works perfectly. No problems. Oh, and I called Canon technical support prior to using this older flash unit because I had read where some people thought it could damage the camera, which it cannot. All I can say is when you are in the market for a new camera, keep your eyes open for Canon to offer special deals on lenses.

Excellent Camera – AshleyLynne –
This camera is hands down one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. Right out of the box, I’ve taken some amazing photos. I’ve literally used it every single day since purchasing and I couldn’t be happier with my decision to buy the Canon Xsi 450D. A couple of my friends purchased this camera and after just briefly seeing some amature photos they had taken, I realized this was the camera I have been looking for. I’ve always been a big fan of Canon products and this delivers. The camera is light weight, sturdy, and easy to use. The only downfall, which is so very minor, is the kit lens doesn’t offer much zoom, so I will be purchasing the Canon 55-250mm telephoto zoom lens to add to my collection. Like I said before, this is a very minor drawback. The kit lens is great besides not being able to zoom in on something far away. I will be posting photos along with my review soon =)

This camera was bought to take better grade pictures of my growing family than what you would get with a pocket camera of comprable pixel resolution. Moreover, it may not be technically on par with the pro series,; however, for my purposes it does a great job. I got this with the 580EXII flash and I haven’t taken a bad picture yet.

Canon EOS 40D DSLR with 17-85mm lens Review

I purchased the Canon EOS40D approximately 6 months ago with the intention of using it primarily for astrophotography. I wasn’t concerned about the specific lens because astrophotography does not require the use of a lens – the body only. I did think that the wider angle lens (17-85mm) would be fun for non-astrophotography though.

After in depth reviews and studying the Canon EOS50D, the EOS40D and the Nikon D80, I decided that in terms of features vs price, the Canon EOS40D was the clear winner.

WOW! Was I right. I have a friend who just bought the Canon EOS50D and after playing with each other’s cameras for a day, he decided that I was correct, the EOS40D offers almost as many features for a lot less money.

For scenery, portraits, action shots and extreme close-up shooting, this camera is awesome. However, I find that the camera shines brightest when used for astrophotography. I couple the camera to an 8″ SCT telescope on a computerized drive. The first time out was a learning experience – I did everything wrong. Before trying again, I purchased a programmable remote and a 1x to 2.5x, 90 degree viewfinder. The next time I went out things came together. I took stunning photos of the moon to warm up. Then I went to Jupiter and its 4 most visible moons. With a single 10 second exposure and no photo stacking, I could just see a little color in the cloud bands. Again, with a single 10 second exposure, the individual stars of a globular cluster stood out distinctively. I ended that same long night with an excellent photo of the Ring Nebula clearly showing the center hole and its greenish color. I couldn’t have been more pleased.

The only drawback to this camera is its weight. For astrophotography, I need to adjust the center of balance of my telescope to its extreme limits. For everyday shooting, I regularly need to take photos with one hand (the why is another story) – something that is virtually impossible with the weight of this camera.

If I were to loose this camera and have twice the value of this camera in cash, I would still buy the Canon EOS40D without any reservations.

Great Camera – good as the 50d – good lens package. – Danny – Nashville, TN
The 40d is nearly as good as the newer 50d, but when I got mine the sensor cleaner malfunctioned within a week. I ended up returning it for a full refund after using it for several shoots, and got a 50d instead. Pictures in low light are slightly better with the 50d, and that was my biggest need. Everything else really seemed the same.

I received the shipment within 10 days. It is really good for this. I purchased the Cannon EOS 40d camera on Feb 1st, 2009. Received around Feb 10th. I did not test it extensively when I received it. On Feb 27, 2009, when my friends and I wanted to take pictures, it continuously show ERR 99. We checked the battery, lens etc, but no luck. It will show ERR 99 after 5 to 6 shots after reset by unload/reload the battery. We sent an email to them asking if I can exchange one but no response yet. I have contacted with Cannon, hopefully the Canon staff will fix it for me.

The combination of the Canon 40D and the 17-85 lens is tremendous. You have your normal lens, an excellent wide angle, and that ‘little extra’ reach with the 85mm range. And with the IS feature, you will always get outstanding shots!

Canon EOS 7D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3-inch LCD and 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens Review

I purchased the Canon EOS 7D to use exclusively for short film and music video work. Prior to buying, I spent a fair amount of time researching the pros and cons of shooting video with DSLRs in general, and specifically as it relates to the 7D.

Initially what I had read about the “rolling shutter” issue with DSLRs had me concerned. Essentially the shutter is held open and the image from the lens is recorded off the sensor in a vertical linear fasion. (ie. in “rows”) In fast-moving subjects, or if the camera is panned too quickly, this can yield a “jello” effect. For instance, a fast pan of a tall building could cause the building to appear more diagonal than vertical.

Thus far, I’ve had no noticeable issues with rolling shutter. The nature of careful shooting at 24fps (ie. being mindful of panning speeds to avoid jarring/judder, etc.) helps greatly here.

Prior to the 7D, I was using a Canon VIXIA HF100 as my main camera, attached to a 35mm depth-of-field adapter. We still use the Vixia as our handy “home movie” camera (It is, afterall, a nice camera!). However, after using the Canon EOS 7D, I don’t think I could ever go back to a standard video camera – or any camera that involves a depth-of-field adapter – for short film shooting.

Here are the reasons:

– No need to flip the video (in the case of 35mm DOF adapters)
– Wide array of lenses to choose from. (I use my old M42/Pentax lenses + EOS adapter.)
– Convenient video codec (H.264 .MOV file… drops right into most any NLE)
– Extreme low-light capability (Wide ISO range can be adjusted quickly) …great for natural or available-light shooting.
– Totally customizable (more below)

Starting with my older Canon GL2, I’ve had a habit with every camera I’ve owned… that is, I dial the sharpness all the way down (no electronic enhancing) and also knock the saturation down a bit. This tends to give a bit more lattitude in post for color correcting. While the Canon EOS 7D has a LOT of menu options, I was able to figure this out after spending 15 minutes or so flipping through the menus. I now have C1 on my dial set for 1920×1080 24p, 1/50 shutter, no sharpening, low contrast, and a few other features either enabled or disabled. I also have the ISO defaulted to around 200, but this can be quickly changed while shooting, via a button on the top-right and selecting the ISO from the list.

Audio recording is an area I read as a drawback to the camera, but I capture all sound wild so it wasn’t a big deal in my case. For those requiring quality audio on-camera a quality shotgun mic could help.

Being so small… you’ll definitely want to add something to this camera to get a bigger form-factor. I’ve read great things about the Z-Finders but I don’t have one yet as they are quite expensive. They can greatly aid in focusing, particularly in bright outdoor shoots, and they give that extra point of contact against your eye for stability. I’m using the IndiFocus setup I’d used previously with the Vixia. Generally speaking, bulking the camera up really improves shots and prevents the jittery look you may get when shooting with a DSLR alone. I find the camera’s LCD display to be sufficient for focusing. (One other nice feature: Just prior to shooting, you can hit the zoom/magnifier to ensure your subject is in tack-focus before pressing record.)

I’m researching variable ND (neutral density) filters, as one of those is a must for bright outdoor shooting, in cases where you want to maintain the shallow depth of field but not crank up the shutter speed and get that stacatto freeze-frame appearance. Standard NDs can be used as well, but it would likely require a set of them to stack on and remove as needed, which in my opinion wouldn’t be as preferable as a single adjustable filter.

At any rate, the camera itself is just fantastic. I really can’t say enough good things about it for its video capability. It’s a pleasure to use, gives total control over the look, and captures stunning HD footage!

Canon ACK-E4 AC Adapter Kit for Canon 1D Mark III DSLR Review

I purchased the ACK-E4 AC Adapter Kit for use with my new Canon 1D Mark IV. In the past (Mark III) this item was included with the camera. Now it is an add on accessory. It works like a champ and saves battery use. It is especially useful in learning all of the aspects associated with the Mark IV (allowing you to play with all the dials, options and the like). It is not an inexpensive product so you have to weigh its merits against your wallet. Extremely easy to use. Just remove your battery, insert the adapter in the battery slot, plug in and away you go. Remember to have your camera turned off until you are ready to use.

I purchased the 55-250 for my wife and I must say I am impressed with its performance. Although its not a fast lens (like my 70-200 2.8), the lens is very sharp. If you’re looking for a good consumer grade lens (paid 0) and mostly take shots of stationary people or objects, its worth it. My wife loves the lens. Now if you like to shoot sports, this is not the lens for you.
The build of the 55-250 is very good (for its price). I was expecting it to be somewhat flimsy (since it has the plastic mount), but its actually not bad.
I would definitely recommend it for someone who wants a “walk around” lens with good reach. If you get this lens, you may want to also get a wider one to complement it. Have not tried the 18-55 IS since my wife already has a Tamron 28-75. That lens is very very good. This review is not about that lens so i wont discuss it.

The Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS Telephoto Zoom Lens is designed with Canon’s Optical Image Stabilizer technology while retaining compactness and lightness, in response to demands of photographers. This high zoom ratio lens is equivalent to a focal length of 88-400mm in the 35mm format (when used on Canon EOS cameras compatible with EF-S lenses), and the image stabilizer effect equivalent to a shutter speed about 4 stops faster than the same size lens without Image Stabilizer. In other words, if the slowest shutter speed you could formerly hold a 250mm lens steadily was 1/250th of a second, with Canon’s 4-stop stabilization correction, you could hand-hold at shutter speeds as slow as 1/15th of a second.

This Vivitar UV Filter is a fine-weather filter that is designed to optimize your photography experience. UV filters block out unwanted ultraviolet light and prevents the UV “fogging/haze” effect”. Protect your lens from scratches and dust.

The LensPen with its unique design makes cleaning your lens fast, simple and effective. On one end, a retractable soft brush sweeps dust and loose particles away from the glass. On the other end, a special dry cleaning compound is used to gently remove fingerprints and spots.

Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black) Review

In my humble opinion, any beginner to intermediate photographer cannot go wrong with this camera. I may not have the experience like some but I will say this: As a father of 4, I have no problems getting great shots of my family at any activity. Be it indoors or out, low light or in the sun, my pictures are 90% fantastic. The other 10% is my own error (rushing the shot, moving, etc…).

It is easy to setup, takes a little more time to understand all of the features but by no means impossible. Requires a little patience and understanding (like any new device).

I purchased the telephoto lens, battery grip, lens covers and speedlight and I just love the quality, speed and ease that I have to enjoy these precious moments. And with the help of Photoshop, even little mistakes disappear. All of this for an investment of less than ,000.

In these times when dollars are a little harder to come by, I found this to be a great value and extremely satisfying.
