Five Key Ways To Promote a Photographer
Let's face it, most of us photography on the side. We have a dream or a goal to make a living too, at some point in time. But to do that, we need to make more sales. To the sale, we need more customers. To get more customers, we must encourage ourselves.
I'm going to go out on a limb, and some assumptions. First, I would accept the money is an issue. We can not all afford to run Google Adwords or even an advertisement in the local paper. Second, I willassume that your work is really good. I do not mean good, because to tell your family and friends. I mean, impress your work with other photographers (people who know what it takes.) That being said, here are five ways to promote (by itself does not cost a fortune.)
1st Cards. This is not an option. You have to have them. Ideally, they should have your name, your picture, the word "photography" or "photographer" and your web address and phone number. Note, I havenot say your street address or a list a mile long of every type of photography you have ever done. When I say: “Your Picture”, I mean just that; it must be a picture of you. If you’re shy sorry but you’re in the wrong business. If you want people to recognize you as a photographer, they need to remember you not one of your great shots.
2. A Web Site. In today’s High Tech world this is also NOT an option. In the old days, if I did “Weddings” for
example, I created a portfolio that was my best work, and it would demonstrate to potential customers one at a time, too. The problem was only one customer was able to view the work in a given time and often have to wait, to get it back to show someone else. With a website you can show your work and promote yourself 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You have to spend a fortune. There are still some pages there that gives you space for free (if you do not mind is their ads.) Oder. . . very cheap, I'll pay $ 4.95per month for 50,000 megabytes of storage space!
3rd Photographer Reoccurring events. Ok, let me define a recurring event. Sports and theater productions come to mind. They want to be able to shoot something that people you will ever see it again to shoot. If you take photos at the rodeo every Saturday afternoon, you'll find people. If you have a wedding to shoot, can some of the guest, you can see on several weddings, but that does not make the same impact. If you shoot all 24 games of basketball –season, that will stick in peoples memories. That doesn’t mean you are limited to selling basketball shots. This is only to get you in the minds of others as a photographer. Once you start handing out those business cards that will lead them to your website. Your website can show all the different types of photography that you
can do.
4. Write Photo Articles. Write about what you know best. If you love taking pictures of horses, write about that. Write about the Equipment needed. Write to the walking horse shows. Write about how horse owners to contact you. There are hundreds of article directories on literately line that would love to have your items. Let's say you write 20 articles and submit them to 100 articles directories, such as distributing business cards 2000's! This you not only get more visitors to your site, but it is you as an expert in this field of photography!
5th Enter Photo Contest. If you submit an imagea photo contest each week for an entire year, you can make money or not, but … You have publicity. Even if you only win one or two of your fifty-two entries, you are now an award-winning photographers! So that you can on your website on your business card, or even in conversation with potential customers. A word of caution, some competitions a goal in mind and that's not promote it for you. Some photo contests will try to sell photo related items again and again. In otherWords, it may in the end you put your name on a mailing list that you had not planned. If it is an e-mail list should be able to unsubscribe from most of these.
Obviously, so that a thousand business cards and puts them on a shelf will not help. But on the other hand, if you give every sale you that customer 10 business cards and tell them to let (do not ask) to know their friends, you'll be surprised how quickly the word can get around. If you try to get yourto work around a lot, not into the whole Internet scene, they point out that most public libraries now have internet access. If they themselves have no access to the Internet, the odds in your favor for someone she does know. One of the advantages for you, your own website is that you can update it whenever you want. One advantage for your customers is that they can see it whenever they want.
Each of these proposals is only a tool. No one tool will inevitably alsoYou rich and famous, but as you begin some of these things together, you can easily develop in the photo business that have surprised you.
